Slovakia launches research coalition to curb youth gambling

The Slovak Gambling Regulatory Authority (URHH) has launched a new research initiative titled ‘Safer Digital Future’ to protect younger demographics from gambling-related risks in digital environments. Through a memorandum of cooperation with the University of St. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava, the regulator aims to establish an evidence-based strategy to address the blurring lines between video gaming and traditional wagering.

The research will specifically investigate digital mechanics such as loot boxes, skin betting, randomized reward systems, and chance-based spending. The initiative focuses on Generation Z (ages 14 to 29) and Generation Alpha (ages 1 to 13), as regulators express concern that exposure to these mechanics may normalize risk-taking behavior from an early age.

By utilizing academic expertise in video game design, player behavior, and psychology, the URHH intends to develop a comprehensive regulatory framework that anticipates emerging digital monetization trends rather than merely reacting to them.
