Regulatory agencies raid illegal alcohol production sites in Nigeria and Ghana

Regulatory agencies in West Africa have conducted significant raids on illegal alcoholic beverage production facilities. In Nigeria, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) uncovered a suspected counterfeit production site in Aba, Abia State. The facility, valued at over ₦500 million, contained equipment, tanks of unidentified liquids, and ethanol. This follows a separate seizure of counterfeit packaging materials worth more than ₦200 million in the same region.

In Ghana, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) shut down an illegal manufacturing facility in the Bekwai Municipality, Ashanti Region. During the operation, officials seized 1,500 bottles of ARCAN Bitters and 5,000 empty branded bottles. Investigations revealed that the bitters allegedly contained high levels of medication used for treating erectile dysfunction. The FDA has issued a public warning against consuming ARCAN Bitters due to potential health risks and has invited the facility's director for investigation.
