Rehabilitation programs in Uruguay and Colombia use vocational training for reintegration

rehabilitation programs social reintegration vocational training incarcerated workers traditional crafts

In Uruguay, the Pelota al Medio a la Esperanza program and the National Institute of Rehabilitation (INR), supported by the National Administration of Public Education (ANEP), are utilizing incarcerated individuals for school maintenance and renovation projects. A pilot initiative is currently underway at School No. 155 'República Federativa de Alemania' in Colonia Nicolich, where workers from Unit No. 7 are improving the school courtyard during spring break to avoid disrupting classes.

In Colombia, the 'Artesanando' pedagogical project has concluded its latest phase at the Santo Ángel Juvenile Detention Center in Pasto. The initiative teaches incarcerated youth the traditional craft of Barniz de Pasto, a recognized piece of intangible human heritage. The program integrates academic learning with practical workshop skills to foster emotional management, conflict resolution, and social reintegration through traditional artistry.
