Reinhard Marx marks 30 years as bishop with reform discussions
Reinhard Marx, the Archbishop of Munich and Freising, is marking 30 years since his ordination as a bishop. To commemorate the anniversary, a discussion titled ‘The synodal bishop: rethinking the office of leadership in the Church under the claim of synodality’ will be held at the Catholic Academy of Bavaria.
Marx, a prominent figure in the German Catholic Church who has served under four popes, will participate in the event alongside experts to discuss potential reforms. The discussions focus on the concept of synodality, addressing whether laypeople should have a greater role in leadership decisions and how the role of a bishop should evolve amidst declining membership and the aftermath of abuse scandals. The future of the ‘Synodal Path’ in Germany remains a subject of debate, facing skepticism from the Vatican and opposition from conservative circles.
