Reinhold Messner expresses wish to have ashes scattered instead of a grave

Renowned mountaineer Reinhold Messner has expressed his wish not to have a traditional grave or monument following his death. In a joint interview with his wife, Diane, the 82-year-old stated that he prefers his ashes to be scattered, noting, “I don't need anything anymore after my death, no monument.”

Messner and his wife have discussed various options for his remains, including scattering them in locations that held significant meaning throughout his life. Messner also mentioned considering a sky burial, a practice used in Tibet, though his wife noted his tendency to romanticize such ideas.

These reflections come as Messner marks the 40th anniversary of a major mountaineering milestone. On October 16, 1986, he became the first climber to reach the summit of all 14 eight-thousand-meter peaks, completing the feat with the ascent of Lhotse in the Himalayas.
