Reinhold Messner returns to Nanga Parbat
Renowned mountaineer Reinhold Messner, 82, has returned to Nanga Parbat in Pakistan, the mountain where his brother Günther died during an expedition in 1970. Messner shared his experience on Instagram, noting that he climbed a rock overlooking the peak, the same spot where he and his brother had first viewed the mountain decades ago.
The 1970 expedition was a defining and tragic moment in Messner's life. While Reinhold and Günther successfully climbed the 8,125-meter peak via the Rupal Face, Günther was killed during the descent on the Diamir Face, reportedly by an ice avalanche. The circumstances of his death led to decades of controversy and legal disputes involving former climbing partners.
In addition to his return to the mountain, Messner expressed a change in his personal outlook, stating that he intends to celebrate his birthdays moving forward. He noted that as he ages, he recognizes that time becomes increasingly precious, driven by a continued curiosity and hunger for adventure.
