Latvia Welfare Minister Reinis Uzulnieks dismissed for drunk driving

Latvian Welfare Minister Reinis Uzulnieks has been dismissed from his post and expelled from the Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) after being caught driving under the influence. On September 12, police stopped Uzulnieks in the Ropaži Municipality; reports indicated a breath alcohol level of 3.09 per mille and a blood alcohol concentration as high as 3.5 per mille, significantly exceeding the legal limit of 0.05%.

Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs issued the dismissal order, describing the behavior as irresponsible and a danger to society. President Edgars Rinkevics also condemned the incident, stating that no official is above the law. Agriculture Minister Uldis Augulis has been appointed to serve as the acting Welfare Minister.

The incident occurs just weeks before the Saeima elections scheduled for October. While Uzulnieks has been expelled from his party, the Central Election Commission noted that he cannot be removed from the official candidate list without a court ruling, meaning his name will still appear on ballots in the Zemgale region.
