Reinis Uzulnieks refuses plea deal in drunk driving case
Former welfare minister Reinis Uzulnieks has refused a plea agreement offered by the prosecution regarding a drunk driving charge. As a result, the case has been referred to the Riga District Court for general proceedings.
The incident occurred in September 2026 in Ropažu municipality, where Uzulnieks was stopped by municipal police. A breathalyzer test indicated an alcohol concentration of 3.09 per mille. Uzulnieks has admitted full guilt and expressed regret for his actions.
To ensure the mandatory confiscation of the vehicle required by law, the car has been seized as part of the criminal process. Under Latvian law, driving with an alcohol concentration exceeding 1.5 per mille is a criminal offense that can lead to up to one year of imprisonment, probation, and a five-year driving ban.
