Reintegration programs expand for formerly incarcerated individuals in Colombia and Mexico

Authorities in Bogotá, Colombia, and Tamaulipas, Mexico, are implementing various programs aimed at the social reintegration of formerly incarcerated individuals.

In Bogotá, the District Secretariat of Security, Coexistence, and Justice is strengthening the ‘Casa Libertad’ program. The initiative provides comprehensive support to adults returning to the community, including psychosocial, educational, and legal guidance. The program focuses on preventing criminal recidivism by offering psychological orientation, conflict resolution workshops, and educational opportunities such as high school completion and technical training in software and trades. Additionally, it assists with job placement, resume building, and entrepreneurship support.

In Altamira, Tamaulipas, the State Public Security Secretariat, in coordination with local training institutes, recently concluded a series of vocational courses at the CEDES Altamira center. A total of 131 participants, including 41 women and 90 men, completed training in various trades such as welding, appliance maintenance, pastry making, and crochet. These programs are designed to provide the skills necessary for participants to generate income and support their families upon release.
