Rekha: The journey from childhood hardship to Bollywood stardom

Actress Rekha, a prominent figure in Bollywood, faced significant personal and financial hardships during her early life. Born to South Indian cinema actors Gemini Ganesan and Pushpavalli, Rekha did not receive legal recognition from her father, as her parents were not married. This lack of paternal support and subsequent family estrangement left her mother to manage the household's financial responsibilities alone.

Driven by economic necessity rather than personal choice, Rekha entered the film industry at a very young age to support her family. She made her debut in the 1958 Tamil film ‘Inti Kutty’ at age three. As she transitioned into leading roles, she faced criticism regarding her appearance and complexion within the industry. However, she overcame these challenges through dedicated work on her fitness and personal presentation, eventually establishing herself as a celebrated icon in Hindi cinema through films such as ‘Umrao Jaan’ and ‘Sawan Bhadon’.
