Relationship experts share strategies for conflict resolution

Relationship experts suggest that couples can break cycles of exhaustion and hopelessness by implementing specific communication strategies and behavioral changes.

To manage conflict, experts recommend using reflective listening to validate a partner's emotional experience, even during disagreements. This involves accurately reflecting what a partner has said to ensure they feel heard. Another technique is the “tap out” method, where a person pauses a conversation when non-adult behaviors—such as name-calling, stonewalling, or contempt—occur, allowing emotions to settle before reconnecting.

Building hope in a relationship involves recognizing personal patterns rather than focusing on fault. Instead of attempting to control a partner, individuals can focus on how their own responses affect the dynamic. By shifting from self-protection to curiosity about established patterns, partners may be able to disrupt negative cycles of pursuit and withdrawal.
