Relationship therapists identify key behaviors that damage trust

Couples therapists and relationship researchers highlight several categories of behavior that can undermine long-term trust and stability in romantic relationships. While major betrayals are significant, many experts suggest that small, repeated omissions and behaviors often cause more cumulative damage.

Financial secrecy, sometimes referred to as financial infidelity, is a common issue. This includes hiding debt, secret spending, or undisclosed accounts. Because financial decisions impact shared goals like housing and retirement, these omissions can lead to significant breaches of trust when discovered.

Other damaging patterns include:

• Unspoken resentment: Suppressing frustrations can lead to contempt, which is a strong predictor of relationship breakdown. • Emotional micro-betrayals: These include venting about a partner to others, comparing a partner to others, or dismissing their feelings. • Communication failures: Acting differently in public versus private, pretending to listen, or ignoring boundaries can create emotional distance.

Experts suggest that addressing grievances early and specifically can prevent the hardening of resentment and provide partners with the opportunity to make necessary changes.
