Relationship trends show rising divorce rates and emotional cushioning

Recent data from the Superintendencia de Notariado y Registro in the Dominican Republic reveals a significant trend in marital stability. Between January 2023 and April 2024, 32,567 heterosexual divorces were recorded, compared to 88,069 marriages. This indicates that approximately one in three unions ends in formal dissolution.

Experts attribute these rising divorce rates to socioeconomic pressures, communication issues, and a lack of conflict resolution tools. To mitigate these risks, specialists recommend fostering assertive communication and establishing clear boundaries to prevent the erosion of emotional bonds.

In a separate behavioral trend, experts are observing the rise of ‘cushioning.’ This practice involves individuals maintaining emotional connections with others as a safety net against potential relationship failure. Driven by the fear of loneliness and the ‘fear of missing out’ (FOMO), this behavior often occurs unconsciously through dating applications, serving as an emotional cushion during periods of uncertainty.
