Reliance Industries poised to overtake Tata Group as India’s top conglomerate
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) is positioned to become India’s most valuable conglomerate, potentially surpassing the Tata Group in market capitalization. This shift is driven by the anticipated initial public offering (IPO) of Jio Platforms. The IPO is expected to value Jio at approximately Rs 10.3 lakh crore, which would raise RIL’s total market capitalization to roughly Rs 28.5 lakh crore, exceeding the Tata Group’s valuation of Rs 25.5 lakh crore recorded in mid-October.
The Jio Platforms IPO is projected to raise Rs 30,188 crore, making it one of India’s largest recent primary offerings. This marks RIL’s first IPO in nearly two decades. Analysts suggest that listing Jio separately may eliminate the holding company discount typically applied to RIL, potentially enhancing the valuation of both entities.
In the broader context of India’s evolving corporate landscape, major players like Reliance Industries, Adani Enterprises, and Grasim Industries have pursued different growth strategies. While Reliance has diversified from energy into retail and digital services, Adani Enterprises focuses on an infrastructure-led incubation model, and Grasim has expanded its industrial portfolio into new markets.
