Reliance Industries welcomes Starlink competition in India

Reliance Industries has issued its first direct response to Elon Musk’s public criticisms regarding Starlink’s delayed entry into the Indian satellite communications market. The conglomerate stated that it welcomes competition, including from Starlink, but emphasized that all players must comply with Indian laws and policies.

Reliance noted that its digital unit, Jio Platforms, is also awaiting regulatory clearances for its own satellite services. The company defended its market position by highlighting Jio’s growth from zero customers in 2016 to over 530 million customers today.

In response, Starlink asserted that it has been working with Indian regulators and industry stakeholders for over five years. The company stated it has already built necessary in-country infrastructure, including gateways and dedicated systems, to serve Indian users securely and is ready to launch high-speed internet services. Elon Musk subsequently expressed appreciation for Reliance’s statement on social media.
