Reliance Jio announces plan for 1,600 satellites to expand Indian connectivity

At the India Mobile Congress 2026, Reliance Jio announced an ambitious plan to expand digital connectivity through a proposed sovereign satellite network. The initiative involves deploying a constellation of approximately 1,600 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites and establishing 23 ground stations across India.

This project, termed ‘sovereign satellite connectivity,’ aims to provide high-speed broadband to regions where terrestrial fiber and mobile networks are difficult to deploy, including over 600,000 villages, maritime areas, and border outposts. Jio intends to maintain control over the entire technology value chain within India, from design and engineering to launch and operations.

Chairman Akash Ambani also highlighted the company’s focus on next-generation technologies. Jio is actively developing an indigenous satellite technology stack and has already filed patents for pre-6G technologies. The company’s roadmap includes advancements in artificial intelligence-driven voice and data services, as well as a commitment to positioning India as a global leader in the 6G era.
