Religion and its evolving societal relevance in Switzerland and Germany

Sociologists and religious leaders are examining the evolving role of religion in modern society as formal church memberships decline. In Switzerland, religious scholar Martin Baumann of the University of Lucerne notes that while institutional affiliation is decreasing, religious and spiritual practices are not disappearing but are instead diversifying and changing form.

In Germany, the Association of Protestant Pastors has highlighted tensions regarding the perceived societal importance of the clergy. Eckehard Möller, chairman of the association, noted that many pastors felt a sense of marginalization after the church was not classified as ‘systemically relevant’ during COVID-19 lockdowns. Despite these institutional challenges, individual practitioners continue to find relevance through community-focused spiritual work and pastoral care.
