Religion intensifies role in Brazilian political discourse

Religion has become a central theme in the final stages of the Brazilian electoral cycle, highlighted by tensions between Catholic and Evangelical groups regarding the symbolic status of Nossa Senhora Aparecida.

Father Paulo Sérgio Bezerra of the Nossa Senhora do Carmo Parish criticized attacks against the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB), stating that the institution's stance is consistent with the Gospel and the Social Doctrine of the Church. He characterized Flávio Bolsonaro as having an authoritarian personality and expressed concern that attacks on the CNBB could extend to other democratic institutions. During a campaign event in São Paulo alongside Tarcísio de Freitas, Bolsonaro's supporters utilized a crochet representation of the saint rather than a traditional image.

Researchers from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF) note that while religion has always been a political agent in Brazil, its visibility has increased due to digital platforms. Professor Elisa Rodrigues and Professor Paulo Barrera Rivera observe that religious groups are increasingly competing for institutional decision-making spaces, intensifying the intersection of faith and political discourse in the current century.
