Religionsmonitor 2026 shows social cohesion in Germany recovering

The Religionsmonitor 2026, conducted by the Bertelsmann Stiftung, indicates that social cohesion in Germany has partially recovered following a decline in 2023. The study, which surveyed over 5,000 people, shows the overall cohesion index rising to 51 points from 46 in 2023.

A key finding suggests that Muslim religiosity does not hinder social cohesion; rather, higher levels of religiosity among Muslims are associated with stronger social relationships and a greater orientation toward the common good. However, the data also reveals a significant disconnect regarding institutional belonging. Highly religious Muslims reported a notably lower sense of connection to the community and its institutions, dropping to 28 points compared to 46 points among less religious Muslims.

Researchers suggest this lack of connection may stem from discrimination, anti-Muslim sentiment, lack of representation, and negative public debates regarding visible Muslim identities. While religiosity serves as a strong factor for social cohesion alongside political orientation and age, the study highlights a need for better institutional recognition and dialogue to bridge the gap between religious communities and the state.
