Religious commemorations for October 16

October 16 marks the feast days of several religious figures in the Catholic tradition, including Saint Edwiges, Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, Saint Beltrán, Saint Gall, and Blessed Margaret of Youville.

Saint Edwiges, born in Bavaria around 1174, served as the Duchess of Silesia and Poland. Following the death of her husband, Henry the Bearded, she retired to a Cistercian monastery in Breslau. She is noted for her devotion to the poor and her life of faith despite personal tragedies, including the loss of six of her seven children.

Other figures commemorated include Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, a Visitandine religious who promoted devotion to the Sacred Heart; Saint Beltrán, who rebuilt the state of Comminges; and Saint Gall, an Irish monk who founded a monastery near Lake Constance. Blessed Margaret of Youville, the first Canadian-born woman to be beatified, founded the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity in Montreal.
