Religious freedom faces growing global threats, experts warn in Italy

Experts at a meeting in Rimini, Italy, have warned that religious freedom is facing increasing global threats from persecution, discrimination, and faith-related violence. During a panel titled ‘The Freedom to Believe: A Human Right at the Center of Geopolitical Challenges’, speakers discussed the impact of authoritarian regimes, extremism, and fragile states on the protection of religious rights.

Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Sokoto Diocese in Nigeria highlighted the evolving nature of Islamic extremism and the actions of terrorist groups within Nigeria. According to the Open Doors 2026 World Watch List, approximately 388 million Christians face persecution globally, with Nigeria identified as one of the most dangerous locations for Christians.

Other regions of concern include the Middle East, specifically Lebanon, where Christians face violence due to conflict, and Sudan, where the civil war has impacted religious communities. The discussions emphasized the responsibilities of the European Union, Italy, and the international community to use diplomatic and political tools to defend these fundamental human rights.
