Religious heritage and rural devotion highlighted in Switzerland and Italy

Cultural heritage and religious devotion are being highlighted through various regional studies and historical accounts in Switzerland and Italy.

In Switzerland, the Museo regionale delle Centovalli e del Pedemonte has published ‘Cara Madòna’, a book exploring the intersection of popular devotion and rural history in the Centovalli region. The work aims to give voice to women in traditional peasant society by reconstructing their prayers and supplications to the Madonna, written in dialect. The publication also documents 22 chapels across the valley, providing historical context regarding their painters, patrons, and the stories of emigration associated with them.

In Italy, the Madonna della Consolazione shrine in Aci Platani is noted for its historical resilience. Located near the Lavinaio-Platani stream, the small votive site has survived numerous floods and natural disasters. Historical records indicate the site was visited by the Bishop of Catania in 1571, and by 1594, a small church was established on the site to seek protection for the community against the local torrent.
