Catholic clergy across Latin America call for social reconciliation and dignity

Religious leaders across several Latin American countries are issuing calls for social reform, peace, and the protection of human dignity through the lens of Christian teachings.

In Paraguay, Bishop Ricardo Valenzuela of Caacupé warned that social vices such as envy, pride, and greed have caused humanity to become “a wolf to man,” leading to increased violence and crime. He emphasized that true social change requires internal transformation and the practice of charity rather than just external laws.

In Argentina, Bishop José Vicente Conejero Gallego urged the faithful to renew their commitment to mercy and service amidst a social context marked by confrontation and violence. He also called for spiritual preparation for the upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV.

In Bolivia, Archbishop René Leigue of Santa Cruz stated that loving God is inseparable from respecting human life and the dignity of the vulnerable. Similarly, in Mexico, clergy in Morelia warned that insecurity, corruption, and the loss of values are rooted in selfishness and a lack of respect for human dignity.

Other regional activities included a missionary gathering in Xalapa, Mexico, and a pastoral meeting for Mapuche Catholic communities in Temuco, Chile, aimed at strengthening community service and cultural identity.
