Religious leaders question André Mendonça's dual roles
Religious leaders in Brazil are raising questions regarding Supreme Federal Court (STF) Minister André Mendonça’s dual roles as a judge and a Presbyterian pastor. A group of reverends has issued an interpellation questioning the ethical, theological, and constitutional implications of Mendonça serving as an active pastor at the Presbyterian Church of Pinheiros while holding a seat on the nation's highest court.
The pastors cite the Westminster Confession of Faith to argue for a distinction between civil magistracy and religious administration. They express concerns regarding judicial impartiality, questioning how Mendonça can act as an arbiter of religious freedoms while remaining an active leader within a specific denomination. The group emphasizes the importance of the separation of church and state to protect both public institutions and religious organizations.
Separately, Pastor Hernandes Dias Lopes, a leader at the same church attended by Mendonça, has used social media to criticize the current national landscape. Lopes has warned of a potential economic recession and alleged that “hidden forces” and corruption have permeated the three branches of government, claiming that moral values are being eroded and the law is being twisted.
