Religious leaders urge extension of TPS for El Salvador

More than 270 religious leaders and organizations, including various U.S. bishops and the Catholic Legal Immigration Network (CLINIC), have urged the Trump administration to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for El Salvador. The current designation is set to expire on September 9, which could affect approximately 170,000 Salvadoran citizens living in the United States.

In a letter addressed to President Donald Trump and key cabinet members, advocates argued that failing to extend the status would cause family separations and force individuals back into an unstable country. Critics of the potential expiration note that the loss of TPS could impact the Salvadoran economy by reducing remittances, which are vital to the nation's financial stability.
