Ghana religious leaders hold reconciliation meeting to ease tensions

Religious leaders in Ghana have initiated a reconciliation process to defuse rising tensions following inflammatory remarks made by several religious figures. The controversy stemmed from derogatory comments regarding Prophet Muhammad and subsequent threats and physical altercations.

In a symbolic gesture at the Police Headquarters in Accra, National Chief Imam Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu facilitated a meeting between Christian and Muslim representatives, including Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno. During the meeting, Pastor Adjei and the individual accused of assaulting him shook hands to signal a commitment to peace.

The Ghana Police Service has arrested individuals involved in the unrest, including Apostle Daniel Junior Yaw Adjei for offensive comments about Islam and Imam Masud Abdullah for allegedly advocating violence. Authorities and religious leaders have emphasized that while freedom of expression is fundamental, it does not grant a license to incite violence or cause social harm.
