Religious literature smuggling in Slovakia during the Cold War
During the 1970s and 1980s, the smuggling of religious literature played a critical role in the struggle for religious freedom in Slovakia. This activity occurred within the broader geopolitical context of the Cold War, serving as a form of information warfare between the communist East and the democratic West.
Under the Czechoslovak regime, which maintained one of the harshest anti-church policies in Eastern Europe, the state held a monopoly on information through strict censorship and media control. To bypass these restrictions, religious texts were smuggled into Slovakia, often across the Polish border or from Western sources, such as the Slovak Institute of St. Cyril and Methodius in Rome.
