Spain observes La Merced feast day across penitentiary institutions
Various penitentiary institutions and religious groups in Spain are observing the feast of Nuestra Señora de la Merced, the patron saint of prisoners and prison staff. The day is marked by institutional ceremonies, religious services, and reflections on the dignity of incarcerated individuals and the importance of social reintegration.
In several Spanish provinces, including Soria, León, Albacete, Cáceres, and Cuenca, authorities and prison officials held events to recognize the work of staff and the progress of inmate rehabilitation programs. For example, the Soria prison recently opened a new high-security module, while the León facility reported significant investments in security and communication systems.
However, the day also highlighted systemic challenges within the prison system. In Villena, the TAMPM union denounced a reduction in nursing staff, warning that a single nurse is now responsible for approximately 1,100 inmates. Similarly, the director of the Valencia-Antoni Asunción prison criticized the ongoing lack of dedicated penitentiary healthcare, a legal mandate that has remained unfulfilled for 23 years.
