Religious organizations lead international anniversary and political mediation efforts
In Uganda, Archbishop Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu has commissioned 298 delegates from the Mothers’ Union to represent the Church of Uganda at the organization’s 150th anniversary celebrations. The global event is scheduled to take place in Durban, South Africa, from September 29 to October 4, 2026, following a Worldwide Mothers’ Union Council meeting. The Archbishop urged the delegates to serve as dignified ambassadors for both the Church and the nation.
In Zambia, eight major church bodies acted as a neutral third party to facilitate the handover of opposition leaders Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu. The leaders were received from representatives of the United Nations Secretary-General and the UN Resident Coordinator in Zambia. The religious organizations facilitated the transfer to legal representatives to allow for due legal processes to begin, calling for the state to ensure the individuals are treated with dignity and that their rights are protected under the rule of law.
