Religious political leaders face significant losses in Brazil's 2026 elections

The 2026 elections have resulted in a significant leadership shift within Brazil’s religious political representation. In the National Congress, the Evangelical Parliamentary Front saw four of its five former presidents lose their seats or fail to secure reelection. Only Sóstenes Cavalcante (PL-RJ) managed to return to the Chamber of Deputies, while Gilberto Nascimento, Cezinha de Madureira, Silas Câmara, and Eli Borges failed to secure their positions.

This turnover suggests a change in leadership styles and communication strategies rather than a decline in the evangelical electorate's influence. A new generation of politicians, such as Nikolas Ferreira, Lucas Pavanato, and André Fernandes, has gained prominence by leveraging social media to convert digital audiences into votes.

In Maranhão, religious segments also faced setbacks. Candidates closely tied to the Assembly of God and the Universal Church failed to secure representation in the Chamber of Deputies or the State Legislative Assembly. Similarly, Catholic candidates identified with specific religious movements did not win seats in these legislative bodies.
