Catholic liturgical readings focus on Job and humility

The liturgical readings for late September 2026 focus on themes of faith, humility, and the nature of true greatness.

Central to the readings is the Book of Job, which depicts the trials of a righteous man who loses his wealth, livestock, and children to various calamities. Despite these losses, Job is noted for his spiritual integrity and his declaration: ‘The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.’

The Gospel readings from the Book of Luke address the disciples' discussions regarding status and importance. In response, Jesus uses the example of a child to teach that true greatness in the Kingdom of God is found in humility and the welcoming of those who are considered small or without power.
