Religious texts and writings explore themes of spiritual despondency

Religious texts and historical writings explore themes of deep spiritual despondency and suffering. The Psalms provide a framework for lamentation, with Psalm 88 describing a soul full of troubles and a life drawing near to death, while Psalm 31 depicts a plea for refuge and deliverance from enemies and anguish.

St John Chrysostom, reflecting on his own exile and treatment by imperial forces, described despondency as a “grievous torture chamber” that attacks both the body and the soul. In letters to St Olympia the Deaconess, he characterized this state as a continuous darkness and a relentless war that weakens the spirit.
