Religious traditions and art restoration highlighted in Central Europe

Religious traditions and art restoration are highlighted in recent church observances in Central Europe. In Breza, Slovakia, Monsignor František Trstenský delivered a homily for the Feast of Our Lady of the Snows. The sermon reflected on the historical origins of the title, tracing it back to a 4th-century tradition in Rome involving the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where snow served as a divine sign for the location of a new temple.

In Zlaté Hory, Czech Republic, a restored 18th-century painting of Our Lady of Help has returned to the local parish church. The artwork, a significant copy of Simon Schwarz’s work inspired by Lucas Cranach the Elder, underwent extensive restoration involving X-ray analysis and dendrochronology. The painting will remain on a side altar while the main Maria Hilf pilgrimage site undergoes a major reconstruction project estimated to cost 4.7 million CZK.
