Religious traditions celebrated in Caniçal and Lamego

Traditional religious festivities are being celebrated in different regions of Portugal. In Caniçal, Madeira, the community honors Nossa Senhora da Piedade, a figure deeply connected to the local fishing identity. The tradition, centered around a 17th-century chapel on Monte Gordo, includes a maritime procession where decorated fishing boats accompany the image of the Virgin from the coast to the parish church.

In Lamego, thousands gathered for the Procissão de Triunfo in honor of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. A unique aspect of this event is that the patron saint's litter, along with other sacred floats, is pulled through the streets by teams of oxen, attracting numerous visitors and pilgrims from across the country.
