Religious trends in Europe highlight church closures and Seville's active traditions

Amidst a growing trend of church closures across Europe, the religious landscape in France shows significant shifts. Reports indicate that a church closes in France every two weeks, with 30% of contemplative monasteries having closed or announced closures. While 46% of the French population identifies as Catholic, regular mass attendance stands at only 5.5%.

In response to these trends and the concept of republican secularism, Leo XIV has advocated for a “just secularism” that allows religion to remain in the public sphere. He has called on Catholics to reclaim their faith heritage and urged bishops to defend the Church's rights to evangelize, educate, and practice public worship.

In contrast to these declines, Seville maintains a high density of active religious sites. The city's numerous brotherhoods provide the resources necessary to keep various chapels, parishes, and basilicas open daily, maintaining a visible religious presence through traditional ceramic altarpieces and historical icons throughout the city.
