REM Council fails to elect president after third attempt

The Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) in Serbia has failed to elect a president for the third consecutive time during its constitutive sessions. In the most recent vote, candidates Miloš Garić and Dubravka Valić Nedeljković each received four votes, falling short of the six votes required for election.

Several proposals were discussed to resolve the deadlock. One suggestion involved splitting the leadership roles based on mandate length, where the member with the shorter mandate would serve as president and the member with the longer mandate as deputy. Another proposal suggested selecting the president and deputy through a random draw combined with a rotational leadership system to ensure consensus. A third proposal to appoint Ira Prodanov Krajišnik as president was rejected due to the length of her six-year mandate.

The Council currently consists of eight members, including four who previously submitted resignations but were permitted to continue working by Parliament. The selection of a ninth member representing national minorities remains suspended pending new elections for minority councils.
