Stevica Smederevac elected president of Serbia's REM Council

Stevica Smederevac has been unanimously elected as the president of the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) Council in Serbia. The election, which took place during the fourth constitutive session, follows a two-month period of deadlock during which the Council was unable to appoint a leader.

Smederevac, who has worked within REM for over 13 years, was supported by all eight voting members. Ira Prodanov Krajišnik was elected as the deputy president. Council member Rodoljub Šabić noted that the decision was a form of political agreement intended to allow the body to function again.

The new leadership faces immediate challenges, most notably the need to monitor media activity during the ongoing election campaign. Smederevac stated that REM will conduct 24-hour monitoring of broadcasters to ensure they provide balanced and objective coverage of all political participants. The Council is also considering expanding its monitoring list to include Informer TV. Additionally, the Council must work toward constituting management boards for public service broadcasters to ensure they can operate at full capacity.
