REM Energías inaugurates $45 million ferrosilicon plant in Paraguay

REM Energías del Paraguay has inaugurated a new electro-intensive ferrosilicon production plant in Limpio, Central Department. The project, representing an initial investment of $45 million, was completed within 18 months and occupies a site of over 70,000 square meters.

The facility utilizes advanced technology, combining Chinese machinery with American and European components, and features a state-of-the-art furnace. The plant is expected to produce 20,000 tons of ferrosilicon annually during its first stage, targeting markets in Europe and the United States. The operation consumes approximately 26 megawatts of electricity and aims to produce “green silicon” by leveraging the country's available energy resources.

President Santiago Peña led the inauguration ceremony, noting the importance of utilizing hydroelectric energy for industrial development. The company, which involves Paraguayan, Brazilian, and Argentine capital, expects to generate more than 600 direct and indirect jobs. Future plans include a second expansion phase with an additional furnace and a new metal alloys factory in Concepción.
