Lizeth Bunshi's remains found in Quito's Machángara River
The remains of 28-year-old stylist Lizeth Bunshi were recovered from the Machángara River in the Guápulo sector of Quito on August 25, 2026, following a 37-day disappearance. The body was found in an advanced state of decomposition in a difficult-to-access area.
The Fiscalía General del Estado officially confirmed Bunshi's identity using forensic dentistry, specifically by matching dental records and the presence of orthodontic brackets. While the autopsy has not yet provided conclusive details regarding the exact cause of death, authorities have characterized it as a violent death.
Cristian Gonzalo V. L., who was the last person seen with the victim, is currently in preventive detention facing charges of involuntary disappearance. However, the victim's legal team and family are seeking to upgrade these charges to femicide, citing witness testimonies that suggest the suspect may have used violence before throwing her into the river. A reconstruction of the events is scheduled for Sunday, August 30, 2026, to further clarify the circumstances of her death.
