An informal United Nations Security Council poll held on 30 July showed UNCTAD head Rebecca Grynspan of Costa Rica topping the field with ten encouragement votes, one discouragement and four neutral votes. Former Guyana foreign minister Carolyn Rodrigues‑Birkett came in second with nine encouragement votes, two discouragements and four neutral votes. Other candidates included International Atomic Energy Agency Director‑General Rafael Grossi of Argentina, who received seven encouragements, two discouragements and six neutral votes, and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet of Chile, who earned six encouragements, five discouragements and four neutral votes.
Rodrigues‑Birkett, campaigning for the top post, said she would prioritise UN reforms, accelerate humanitarian assistance and improve development financing, adding that “there is no alternative to the UN”. She has been meeting member states to discuss her vision for a reformed and more effective organisation.
