Remedios displacement follows assassination of social leader

Twenty-one people from eleven families have been forcibly displaced from the Río Bagre rural district in Remedios, Antioquia, seeking refuge in the urban center of Segovia. The displacement follows the assassination of William de Jesús Giraldo, a local merchant and social leader.

Authorities are investigating the Clan del Golfo as the primary suspect behind the homicide and related threats. The Corporación para el Desarrollo y la Paz del Nordeste Antioqueño (Corpades) reported that an illegal checkpoint was established on September 9, during which armed individuals allegedly assaulted residents and searched their mobile phones.

Local officials warn that the number of displaced persons may increase as more families flee the region due to ongoing intimidation and territorial disputes between illegal armed groups in Northeast Antioquia.
