Remis union proposes ride-hailing apps register under existing laws
The Sindicato Independiente de Remiseros (SIR) has proposed that ride-hailing platforms such as Uber, DiDi, and Cabify operate under the existing legal framework for remises in La Plata. According to SIR leader Javier Scaramutti, these companies do not require new regulations but should instead register using authorized vehicles and comply with Municipal Ordinance 9.215 and Collective Bargaining Agreement 799/22.
Scaramutti highlighted significant safety concerns, noting that because these platforms currently use private vehicles rather than authorized transport units, passengers lack adequate insurance coverage in the event of accidents.
The union also criticized the labor conditions associated with the app-based model, reporting that drivers often work between 16 and 17 hours daily to maintain their income. Additionally, the SIR raised concerns regarding car rental companies that supply vehicles to these platforms, alleging they operate without sufficient local urban control.
