Remondis acquires stake in Saubermacher amid shifting waste industry
The European waste management sector is undergoing significant consolidation as companies transition from simple disposal services to becoming critical raw material suppliers. The German waste disposal group Remondis has acquired a 27.79 percent stake in Saubermacher, a move that strengthens control over material streams and recycling processes, including battery recovery.
Saubermacher has also expanded through the acquisition of 75.1 percent of the Austrian waste management company Buchegger and the full integration of battery specialist GRS Service. This shift highlights a growing trend where waste management firms secure the secondary raw materials required by European industry.
Simultaneously, the European Union is increasingly integrating waste-to-energy technology into its energy strategy through the ‘AccelerateEU’ plan. While countries like Germany and Sweden utilize thermal waste recovery to provide stable electricity and heat, other EU nations still rely heavily on landfills. To combat methane emissions, the EU has mandated a ban on the landfilling of all recyclable waste starting in 2030.
