REMONDIS Australia trials Mercedes-Benz electric waste trucks

REMONDIS Australia has commenced commercial waste collection trials in Brisbane using the Mercedes-Benz eEconic 6×2, a battery-electric truck designed for zero exhaust emissions. The vehicle utilizes lithium-ion batteries to power electric motors in the drive axle through a unique ‘e-axle’ design, which removes the need for a traditional driveshaft and enables near-silent operation.

The eEconic model features energy recovery braking to improve efficiency during stop-and-go urban driving. While these trucks have previously been utilized in Europe, the specific model used in this trial was custom-built to meet Australian mass, dimension, and climate requirements.

REMONDIS Australia CEO Björn Becker noted that the company, its parent company RETHMANN, and Mercedes-Benz share long-standing German heritage. With a fleet of 600 waste collection trucks across Australia, the company is exploring electric, hydrogen, and hybrid technologies to support circular economy outcomes.
