Remote work linked to decreased daily movement and potential weight gain

A 2025 meta-analysis involving 38 studies suggests that remote work may impact body weight by altering daily movement and sedentary habits. While remote work offers benefits such as cost savings for companies and reduced commute times for employees, it can lead to significant changes in Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT).

Research indicates that individuals working from home spend, on average, 31 minutes more sitting during the workday and take approximately 2,564 fewer steps per day compared to those working in person. These lost steps often consist of incidental movements associated with office life, such as walking to meetings, using stairs, or commuting via public transport. Consequently, even individuals who maintain a regular gym routine may experience a decrease in overall daily physical activity due to the remote work environment.
