Remote work trends in Italy show structural shifts and health concerns

Remote work has transitioned from a pandemic-era necessity to a structural element of the Italian labor market. Data from Istat indicates that remote employment increased significantly from 4.8% in 2019 to 13.8% in 2023. By 2025, approximately 3.57 million Italians were working at least partially from home, according to the Politecnico di Milano Smart Working Observatory.

As the landscape evolves toward 2026, workers are increasingly prioritizing autonomy and work-life balance over simple location flexibility. However, the rise of home-based work has introduced health risks related to hyper-sedentary behavior. Experts warn that prolonged sitting without a commute can increase blood pressure and cardiac risks.

To mitigate these effects, specialists recommend “snack exercises,” which involve short bursts of activity such as five-minute walks every hour or brief high-intensity movements like squats. Other suggested strategies include using walking pads, standing during phone calls, or implementing a “fake commute” through morning walks to maintain physical activity and mental focus.
