Northern Germany storms cause injuries, tree falls and floods
Severe thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail and wind gusts up to 80 km/h swept across North Rhine‑Westphalia, Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern, Lower Saxony and Brandenburg on the evening of 30 July 2026. Police recorded about 30 weather‑related emergency calls in the Rostock area and more than 20 in Neubrandenburg, while roughly 30 incidents were logged overall.
The storms knocked down numerous trees, some striking vehicles. A tree fell on the B5 near Redefin, lightly injuring a 52‑year‑old woman, and another struck a semi‑trailer on the L72 near Lübesse, lightly wounding a 26‑year‑old truck driver. In Hambühren a fallen tree hit the B214, caused basement flooding and a local power outage.
Water‑sport participants were also affected: four stand‑up paddlers were blown off SUP boards on the Schweriner See and rescued unharmed, and a 22‑year‑old’s boat capsized on the Unterwarnow in Rostock, with the occupant sustaining only minor abrasions. Emergency services deployed 24 firefighters with four fire‑engine vehicles to handle the incidents.
