René Benko granted house arrest with ankle monitor

The Innsbruck Regional Court has granted a request by René Benko, the founder of the insolvent Signa Group, to move from prison to electronically monitored house arrest. Benko, 49, will wear an ankle monitor and reside in a rented 60-square-meter apartment in Innsbruck.

Benko was recently sentenced to 30 months in prison for fraud and fraudulent bankruptcy. The court noted that he has already served two-thirds of this sentence through pretrial detention. His defense attorney, Norbert Wess, argued that the move is necessary to allow Benko to adequately prepare for upcoming complex economic trials.

The decision has faced opposition from the Economic and Corruption Prosecutor's Office (WKStA), which cited risks of further criminal activity and the potential for tampering with evidence. The house arrest is subject to strict conditions, including contact bans with certain individuals from the Signa Group and limitations on daily movement. Benko is scheduled to face further court proceedings on November 4 and 5 regarding additional fraud allegations.
