René Benko under fraud probe as Austria debates future of his villa

Austrian real‑estate magnate René Benko, founder of the Signa group, remains in pre‑trial detention. In a recent interview he allegedly implicated former Signa supervisory board chair Alfred Gusenbauer in an unlawful advance payment of €10 million that prosecutors say damaged Signa Development and Signa Prime. The Economic and Corruption Prosecutor’s Office is investigating Gusenbauer for embezzlement and fraud; Gusenbauer denies the accusations and is cooperating with authorities.

Separately, the city of Innsbruck has examined proposals to convert Benko’s former residence in Igls – the so‑called “Benko‑Villa” – into a luxury hotel. The property is currently zoned for residential use under the Tiroler Raumordnungsgesetz, and a hotel conversion would require a rezoning procedure, council approval, and compliance with tree‑preservation obligations. City officials say they are open to constructive dialogue but need a concrete development plan before any change can be considered.
