Renê da Silva Nogueira Júnior authorized to study in prison

Renê da Silva Nogueira Júnior, a businessman detained for the fatal shooting of street sweeper Laudemir de Souza Fernandes during a traffic dispute in Belo Horizonte, has been granted judicial authorization to pursue a distance learning degree in Financial Management while in prison.

Judge Matheus Moura Miranda issued the decision on May 29, citing the constitutional right to education and its potential role in prisoner rehabilitation. The authorization is subject to “rigorous supervision” by the administration of the Caeté Prison, where Nogueira Júnior is held. Internet access must be used exclusively for academic purposes; any unauthorized use may result in immediate suspension of the benefit and disciplinary action.

The case, which stems from an incident in the Vista Alegre neighborhood, has drawn significant attention due to controversies regarding Nogueira Júnior’s academic background. He previously claimed on social media to have attended prestigious institutions such as Harvard, USP, and PUC-Rio, all of which denied any affiliation with him. Additionally, the investigation has looked into the role of his wife, a police officer, regarding access to the firearm used in the crime.
